The Breeders’ Cup Mile is a Grade 1 turf race over eight furlongs, and it demands gate speed, tactical skill on tight turns, and a strong finish. The big question this year is whether anyone can beat defending champion Notable Speech.
The field has American Grade 1 winners, European Group 1 horses, and a Japanese sprinter stretching out to a mile. Here are the 10 leading contenders, plus a look at how the race could unfold.

1. Deterministic
Deterministic is one of North America’s most versatile turf horses. He’s a 5-year-old by Liam’s Map (a Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner) out of Giulio’s Jewel, a Speightstown mare, bred by Hinkle Farms and bought for $625,000 as a yearling. He has 10 wins and 3 seconds from 16 starts.
He started with Christophe Clement, winning the Grade 3 Gotham on dirt with a 93 Beyer, then moved to Miguel Clement and became a turf star. He won the Virginia Derby and Hill Prince at three, then the Manhattan and the Fourstardave Handicap at Saratoga in both 2025 and 2026. His latest Fourstardave earned an Equibase figure of 118, and his career best is 122.
He was second behind Notable Speech in the Woodbine Mile, so he’s ready for this level. Kendrick Carmouche rides him, and he’s likely to sit just behind the early pace.
2. Notable Speech
The defending champion is Godolphin’s top miler. He’s a 5-year-old chestnut homebred by Dubawi out of Swift Rose, an Invincible Spirit mare, trained at Newmarket by Charlie Appleby and ridden by William Buick. He has 10 wins from 19 starts.
At three, he won the 2024 2000 Guineas and the Sussex Stakes. He was third in the 2024 Breeders’ Cup Mile behind More Than Looks, then won the race in 2025, beating Formidable Man by 1½ lengths and earning American Champion Male Turf Horse honors. In 2026, he won the Lockinge, the City of York, and the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile. His peak Timeform and Racing Post ratings are both 126, and his Equibase figure is 122. His turn of foot is still his best weapon.
3. Program Trading
Program Trading is a battle-tested Grade 1 turf horse for Chad Brown, cutting back to a mile from longer races. He’s a 6-year-old British-bred ridgling by Lope de Vega out of Dreamlike, an Oasis Dream mare, racing for Klaravich Stables. He has 7 wins from 17 starts.
At three he won the Grade 1 Saratoga Derby Invitational and the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby. At four he won the Grade 1 Old Forester Bourbon Turf Classic on Kentucky Derby day, with Flavien Prat riding. He proved he can handle a mile in the 2025 Coolmore Turf Mile, finishing second by a neck to Rhetorical with a career-best 121 Equibase figure. This year he won the United Nations at Monmouth Park wire-to-wire.
4. Formidable Man
Formidable Man is the West Coast’s top two-turn miler, and he’s best on firm turf. He’s a 5-year-old by City of Light out of Fanticola, a Silent Name mare, bred by Town and Country Horse Farms and trained by Michael McCarthy. He has 9 wins from 19 starts.
At three he won the Oceanside, the Del Mar Derby, and the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby. In 2025 he won the Frank E. Kilroe Mile at Santa Anita and the Del Mar Mile, then was second to Notable Speech in the Breeders’ Cup Mile. This year he won the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile at Santa Anita in his first start, his third career Grade 1.
5. Lake Forest
Lake Forest is a 5-year-old chestnut gelding by No Nay Never out of Lady Aquitaine, an El Prado mare, trained at Newmarket by William Haggas and ridden by Cieren Fallon. He has 5 wins and 7 seconds from 21 starts.
He won the Gimcrack at two and was second in the Commonwealth Cup at three. This year he won the Lennox Stakes at Goodwood over seven furlongs, then finished second to Notable Speech in the City of York, beaten 2¾ lengths. He came to the U.S. for a prep and was second in the Coolmore Turf Mile at Keeneland on October 3, closing behind Rhetorical.
6. Rhetorical
North America’s top front-running miler is a 5-year-old New York-bred gelding by Not This Time out of Sheet Humor, a Distorted Humor mare. He’s trained by William Walden and ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr., and he has 7 wins from 12 starts.
In October 2025, he won the Coolmore Turf Mile, beating Program Trading by a neck, for a career-high 122 Equibase figure. He was fourth behind Notable Speech in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Mile. This year he won the Old Forester Bourbon Turf Classic on Derby Day, then won the Coolmore Turf Mile again on October 3, leading all the way to beat Lake Forest by 2¼ lengths. That’s his third Grade 1.
7. Lugal
Lugal is the Japanese wildcard, a 6-year-old by the late Duramente out of Atab, a New Approach mare, trained by Haruki Sugiyama for Yoshimasa Ema. He has 5 wins from 23 starts. His Group 1 win came in the 2024 Sprinters Stakes at Nakayama. In late 2025, he won the Group 2 Hanshin Cup over 1,400 meters and set a course record. This year he was second, by 0.38 lengths, in the Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint at Meydan, which showed he can ship and perform.
He’s a sprinter testing his speed at eight furlongs.
8. Haatem
Haatem is a 5-year-old by Phoenix of Spain out of Hard Walnut, a Cape Cross mare, trained in England by Richard Hannon. He has 6 wins from 23 starts over four seasons. He won the Vintage Stakes at two, the Group 3 Craven at three, and the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot carrying top weight. He was also third behind Notable Speech in the 2024 2000 Guineas and second by a head in the Irish 2000 Guineas.
Wathnan Racing sent him to North America this year, and he won the one-mile Mint Millions at Kentucky Downs on September 7.
9. Zulu Kingdom
Zulu Kingdom is a 4-year-old ridgling by Ten Sovereigns out of Zindziswa, a Smart Strike mare, trained by Chad Brown. He started in France with André Fabre and has 8 wins from 13 starts.
At two he won the With Anticipation and the Pilgrim. At three he won the Columbia, the Grade 1 American Turf on Derby Day, and the Manila. This year he won the Grade 1 Maker’s Mark Mile at Keeneland, beating Notable Speech and Rhetorical, then the Kelso at Saratoga. He was third behind Deterministic in the Fourstardave with a 114 Equibase figure and fifth in the Coolmore Turf Mile.
10. Archivist
Archivist is a 4-year-old chestnut gelding by Dubawi out of Provenance, a Galileo mare, trained by Hamad Al Jehani for Wathnan Racing. He has 5 wins and 4 seconds from 14 starts.
He won the Phi Advertising Handicap at Meydan in the 2026 Dubai Carnival, then went to England and won the Coral Golden Mile at Goodwood against 17 rivals while carrying 138 pounds. On August 22, he won the Group 3 Strensall Stakes at York by 7¼ lengths. He improved all summer and may be able to compete with established Group 1 winners.
What to watch
There’s no vulnerable favorite here. Notable Speech is still the horse to beat, thanks to his ratings and his record on American turf. But Deterministic and Rhetorical are strong domestic challengers. Deterministic has two straight Fourstardave wins, and Rhetorical has three Grade 1 wins and likes the front end.
The pace will likely come from Rhetorical, with Deterministic sitting right behind. If they duel, the closers get their chance.
