The Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile is eight furlongs around two tight turns, with barely a moment to breathe. At Keeneland, the starting gate sits right at the clubhouse turn, so runners get an abbreviated dash into the first bend.
That makes the 2026 Dirt Mile one of the most demanding tactical tests in North American racing. It rewards gate speed and early position, and it punishes deep closers who can’t find clearance before the turn.
This year’s field is a collision of three groups: proven older horses, classic-placed 3-year-olds cutting back in distance, and turf transplants with serious main-track acceleration. Here’s the full countdown of the top 10, followed by the pace scenario.

Odds and post positions will be set at the draw.
1. Knightsbridge
Breeding and connections. Knightsbridge is a Godolphin homebred trained by Hall of Famer William I. Mott. The 5-year-old dark bay or brown horse is by Nyquist, a champion 2-year-old and Kentucky Derby winner, out of Tyburn Brook, an unraced Bernardini mare. He enters the Dirt Mile as the fastest and most formidable older horse in the division.
Career. Over a 12-race career, he has won eight times. He won his debut at Churchill Downs by 10½ lengths and finished third in the Grade 3 Perryville at Keeneland before becoming an uncatchable older force.
His 2026 campaign. This was one of the most remarkable sequences in modern dirt racing:
- He won the Fred W. Hooper Stakes.
- He crushed the Gulfstream Park Mile by 11¼ lengths.
- He was a gallant second in the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap at Saratoga.
- He won the Monmouth Cup by 10¼ lengths.
- He stretched out to 10 furlongs and dominated the Grade 1 Pacific Classic at Del Mar by 6¼ lengths under Junior Alvarado.
What’s next. He’s set to retire to Jonabell Farm for the 2027 breeding season, so this could be his last race. His high cruising speed, tactical assertiveness out of the gate, and sustained acceleration suit the two-turn mile at Keeneland. If he gets an uncompromised tracking trip into the clubhouse turn, he’s the standard of the division.
2. Further Ado
Breeding and connections. Further Ado carries the colors of Spendthrift Farm and is trained by champion conditioner Brad H. Cox. The chestnut colt was bred in Kentucky by John C. Oxley. He’s by Gun Runner, a Horse of the Year, out of Sky Dreamer, a Grade 3-placed Sky Mesa mare. He’s a classic-caliber 3-year-old with real tactical versatility.
Career. In 10 starts he has four wins. At two he beat a Keeneland maiden field by 20 lengths, then won the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club at Churchill Downs.
His 2026 campaign.
- His signature win came on the Keeneland dirt: he demolished the Grade 1 Toyota Blue Grass by 11 lengths.
- He added a two-length win in the Grade 3 Matt Winn.
- He was a sharp second, beaten a half-length, in the Grade 1 Pennsylvania Derby at Parx.
Figures and track edge. His peak Equibase Speed Figure is 107. He loves the Keeneland main track, where his two route wins came by a combined 31 lengths. That’s a big home-track edge, and the short run to the first turn and the abbreviated stretch should help his middle-distance acceleration.
3. Napoleon Solo
Breeding and connections. Napoleon Solo is trained by Chad Summers and owned by Espoir USA. The gray or roan colt was bred in Kentucky by John D. Gunther and Eurowest Bloodstock and bought for just $40,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale. He’s by Liam’s Map, who won the 2015 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, out of Atomic Blonde, a winning Scat Daddy mare. He brings classic Grade 1 credentials.
Career. In seven starts, he has three wins and two seconds.
- At two: he romped in his Saratoga debut, then won the Grade 1 Champagne over a one-turn mile at Aqueduct by 6½ lengths.
- At three: he won the Grade 1 Preakness at Laurel Park over 1 3/16 miles under Paco Lopez, turning back determined challenges to win by 1¼ lengths.
- Then: he was second in the Grade 1 Haskell at Monmouth and second in the Grade 1 Travers at Saratoga, beaten a half-length each time.
Figures and style. His speed figures show elite class: a 103 in the Travers and a 102 in the Haskell. He’s usually ridden by Paco Lopez or John Velazquez, and he’s a forward-pressing stalker who does best when prompting honest fractions and saving ground on the inside.
4. Full Serrano
Breeding and connections. Full Serrano is an internationally seasoned veteran for owner Hronis Racing and trainer John W. Sadler. The 7-year-old dark bay or brown horse is by Group 1 winner Full Mast, out of Serra Do Mar, a Jump Start mare.
Career. He has 7 wins from 23 starts. After dominating Argentine group stakes at Hipódromo Argentino de Palermo, he moved to Southern California and won the 2024 Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile. He was second in the 2025 Grade 1 Goodwood at Santa Anita.
In 2026. He has stayed in good form: a game third in the Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park, fourth in the Grade 3 Oaklawn Mile, and third behind Knightsbridge in the Pacific Classic.
Style. With regular rider Joel Rosario, he’s a classic gate-to-wire runner who breaks sharply, controls the rail, and sets demanding opening splits.
5. Coal Battle
Breeding and connections. Coal Battle is campaigned by Robert Norman’s Norman Stables and trained by 72-year-old veteran Lonnie Briley. The 4-year-old dark bay colt was bred in Kentucky by Hume Wornall and Jay Adcock and bought for $70,000 at the Texas Thoroughbred Association Yearling Sale. He’s by Coal Front, a multiple graded stakes winner by Stay Thirsty, out of Wolfblade, a stakes-placed Midshipman mare. His family traces through Bernardini and A.P. Indy.
Career. He has 5 wins and 3 seconds from 16 starts. At two and three, he put together a four-race stakes winning streak that ended with a 1¼-length win in the Grade 2 Rebel at Oaklawn Park, earning 50 Kentucky Derby points.
In 2026. He became an effective older middle-distance horse:
- second in the Grade 3 Ack Ack over a mile at Churchill Downs
- second in the Lake Ouachita
- third in the R.A. Cowboy Jones
- fourth in the Grade 3 Hanshin
Style. In a field with a lot of projected front-end speed, he’s a late runner who could pick off tired pacesetters, but he’ll need to start his move early in Keeneland’s short stretch.
6. Bishops Bay
Breeding and connections. Bishops Bay is trained by Brad H. Cox and bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm. He’s by Uncle Mo, out of Catch My Drift, a stakes-placed Pioneerof the Nile mare, which makes him a half-brother to Louisiana Derby winner Catching Freedom. He’s a classic two-turn mile specialist in career-best form.
Career. Over 18 starts, he has 11 wins and 5 seconds. At three, he was second by a head in both the Grade 3 Peter Pan and the Grade 3 Ohio Derby. As an older horse, he became a multiple graded stakes winner, taking the Grade 3 Salvator Mile and the Grade 3 Philip H. Iselin at Monmouth Park during 2025 and 2026.
His final prep. He won the Grade 3 Ack Ack over a mile at Churchill Downs on September 26.
Style. Ridden by Tyler Gaffalione and Flavien Prat, he has the early speed to stalk from second or third and rate kindly outside rivals.
7. T O Password
Breeding and connections. T O Password comes from the Japan Racing Association, representing trainer Daisuke Takayanagi and owner Tomoya Ozasa. The 5-year-old bay horse was bred in Japan by Yanagawa Bokujo. He’s by Copano Rickey, an 11-time dirt Grade 1 winner by Gold Allure, out of T O Rachel, a winning King Kamehameha mare.
Career. He has 5 wins and a second from 12 starts. At three, he won his first two starts in Japan, including the Fukuryu Stakes over 1,800 meters at Nakayama, which clinched his place on the Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby. He then shipped to Churchill Downs and finished a fifth in the 2024 Grade 1 Kentucky Derby, beaten only 6½ lengths after a compromised start.
As an older horse. He focused on Japanese one-mile races:
- won the Nagoyajo Stakes
- second in the Listed Oasis Stakes
- won the Akhalteke Stakes over 1,600 meters at Tokyo
- third in the Grade 3 Elm Stakes at Sapporo in August 2026
Style. With regular rider Kohei Matsuyama (and previously Kazushi Kimura), he’s an aggressive early presser who likes contested battles on the inside.
8. Iron Man Cal
Breeding and connections. Iron Man Cal is trained by Philip D’Amato and is one of the season’s most interesting turf-to-dirt stories. He was bred in Kentucky by the late Governor Brereton C. Jones and bought for $130,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale. The 4-year-old gelding is by Collected, a Grade 1 Pacific Classic winner, out of Joyful Dreams, a Kitten’s Joy mare.
Career. He has 4 wins and 2 seconds from 11 starts. He started as an elite juvenile turf horse, winning the Grade 3 Zuma Beach at Santa Anita and finishing second by a neck in the 2024 Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf at Del Mar.
The switch to dirt. He was gelded in early 2026, and D’Amato moved him to dirt. He won a Santa Anita allowance race, then finished a tough third in the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap over 1 1/16 miles. He earned his Breeders’ Cup spot by wiring the Grade 2 Pat O’Brien over seven furlongs at Del Mar on August 29.
9. Owen Almighty
Breeding and connections. Owen Almighty is trained by Brian A. Lynch. The 4-year-old bay colt was bred in Kentucky by Mark Stanley. He’s by Speightstown, an Eclipse Award-winning sprinter, out of Tempers Rising, a Grade 2-placed Bayern mare. Bayern won both the Breeders’ Cup Classic and the Haskell.
Career. He has 4 wins and 4 seconds from 15 starts. At two, he won his debut and the Ellis Park Juvenile, then was second in the Grade 3 Iroquois over a one-turn mile. As a sophomore, he won the Tampa Bay Derby after a second in the Sam F. Davis, then was fifth in the Kentucky Derby and third in the Grade 3 Perryville at Keeneland.
In 2026. Lynch focused on mile races. He won the R.A. Cowboy Jones at Ellis Park, was second by a neck in the Grade 3 Hanshin at Churchill Downs, and was a game third behind Bishops Bay in the Ack Ack on September 26. His experience over the Keeneland surface and his balance around two turns make him a contender to hit the board.
10. Bracket Buster
Breeding and connections. Bracket Buster is trained by Victoria H. Oliver, and he’s peaking at the right time. The 4-year-old bay colt was bred in Kentucky by David Baxter. He’s from the second crop of Vekoma, a Grade 1 Metropolitan Mile winner, out of Spring Dance, a stakes-winning Dance With Ravens mare.
Career. He has 4 wins and 3 seconds from 13 starts. At three, he won the NYRA Bets Pegasus Stakes at Monmouth Park and then drew off to win the Grade 3 Oklahoma Derby over 1⅛ miles at Remington Park. He was a brilliant second to Sovereignty in the Grade 1 Travers at Saratoga.
In 2026. After a slight layoff, he romped by 15 lengths in the Listed West Virginia Governor’s Stakes over 1 1/16 miles at Mountaineer. Then he was an unlucky second in the Parx Dirt Mile on September 19.
Figures. He has a strong speed profile: a 109 Equibase figure in the Governor’s, twin 103s in the Travers and the Oklahoma Derby, and a 102 at Parx. He has already proven he handles Keeneland’s two-turn layout in the Lexington Stakes, and he has the stamina to finish if the leaders tire each other out.
The pace scenario
Everything comes down to the gate at Keeneland. A blistering pace from Full Serrano, Iron Man Cal, and T O Password should set the stage for the stalkers to strike.
- The horse to beat: Knightsbridge.
- His top tactical rival: Bishops Bay.
- Dangerous on his beloved Keeneland dirt: Further Ado.
- A live threat at a big price: Bracket Buster.
- The deep closers: Coal Battle will need to start his move early in the short stretch.
The 2026 Dirt Mile promises relentless fractions, tactical poise, and unmatched class.
