The 2026 Travers Stakes was supposed to be another major chapter in Golden Tempo’s remarkable season.
Instead, Saratoga witnessed the arrival of a new star.
Leading Change produced a stunning performance in the $1.25 million Grade 1 Travers Stakes on August 29, defeating Preakness winner Napoleon Solo and Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner Golden Tempo. The victory immediately changed the conversation surrounding the three-year-old championship.
What made the result even more impressive was Leading Change’s lack of experience.
The colt entered the Travers having raced only twice previously. He had won a maiden race at Churchill Downs before following it with a narrow victory in the Indiana Derby. Saratoga represented a completely different level of competition.

A Perfect Moment in the Stretch
Under jockey Manny Franco, Leading Change tracked the action before making his move in the stretch.
Napoleon Solo had established himself as the horse to catch, but Leading Change continued to close and eventually passed him to win by half a length. Golden Tempo finished third after making his customary late run.
The result was more than simply another Grade 1 victory.
It demonstrated that Leading Change could handle a mile and a quarter against some of the strongest three-year-olds in America.
Trainer Brad Cox had already believed the colt possessed that ability. The Travers provided the evidence.
What Does This Mean for Golden Tempo?
Golden Tempo remains one of the most accomplished horses of the 2026 season.
He entered Saratoga having already captured both the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, giving him two Classic victories in the same season.
His third-place finish does not erase those achievements.
However, the Travers result does make the championship picture considerably more interesting.
Leading Change has now entered the conversation, while Golden Tempo must look toward the fall and potentially the Breeders’ Cup to strengthen his case.

Leading Change was relatively unknown compared with Golden Tempo and Napoleon Solo before the Travers.
